On October 13, 2001, a beautiful day, we celebrated the 50th birthday of San Lorenzo High School. The school was filled with Rebels of all ages. It was fun to eavesdrop on conversations between people so much older and younger, and to be able to understand the emotions being shared by both.

We were treated to performances by the current band, choir, and cheerleaders. The band and choir learned the Alma Mater for the occasion. I also enjoyed conversations with the current staff of the Rebel Record and the sponsors of the Viet Nam Veterans' Memorial project.

Only the magic of the evening could top the events of the day. Mangin Pavilion (the boys gym) was beautiful with tables covered in white tablecloths and adorned with colorful centerpieces. The art on the walls inspired us with the Rebel spirit, even though the new "politically correct" mascot was unrecognizable to most of us. For those of you who value tradition, I'll let you in on a well known secret. Below the covering on the floor, at the center of the basketball court, the image of Colonel Reb still occupies its hallowed place.

Happily, we enjoyed the company of the "true" Colonel Reb, Gary Dougherty. Sadly, Gary left us only months after the celebration.

There truly was electricity in the air as we listened to comments by past principals. Representatives from each class were asked to stand as their year of graduation was announced. The dance floor was filled by alums reliving their pasts through the music provided by the DJ. And, in response to the attack on September 11, the place erupted with the playing of Lee Greenwood's "God Bless The U.S.A." I haven't heard so much noise in the gym since Jim Fennelly's last second shot beat Tennyson in 1961.

There's much more to say about the 50th. Were you there? How about contributing your thoughts.
