Equestrian Fun Ride - June 20th
After the Oh So Scenic Run and the Codfish Falls Hike the
equestrians in the FTA decided to organize an outing just for them. This
will be an easy, beginning of the summer, fun ride from White Oak Flat
to the Middle Fork and back. Meet at 10 AM at White Oak Flat and bring
a lunch to enjoy at the river. To get to White Oak Flat, take McKeon-
Ponderosa Way from Foresthill Rd. It is 2.2 miles to White Oak Flat
which is wide flat spot on the left with oak trees and a picnic table.
There is room to park trailers. The ride to the river is about 3 miles
each way on a gently sloping fire access road (Mckeon-Ponderosa). Call Lori
Lunsford at (530) 367-4254 for more information.
Monte Verde Estates Update
The Monte Verde Estates development went before the county planning
commission on May 14th. Several people from the FTA attended to
request trail easements to allow for connection to the
Foresthill Divide Loop Trail and the historic Western States Trail via
McKeon-Ponderosa Way be provided for in the project. There was a long
discussion about the trail easements and whether or not the community would be
gated on the Middle Fork side (there will be no gates on the North Fork side).
The planning commission recommended that
there be no gates at all since the Foresthill community does not want gated
communities and the Placer County general plan recommends against gated
communities in rural areas. The developer plans to appeal this decision.
The location of the trail easements depends on whether or not there are gates.
If there are no gates, trail access would be provided using a trail next
to roads in the community and only small trail easements punching routes
to the public land between two parcels on the edges of the property would
be needed. If there is a gate, trail access would routed differently.
The project was approved with the provision that public land trail access will
be provided, with the exact location of the trail easements to be
worked out in the future.
Foresthill Road Cleanup
We did our spring cleaning on Foresthill Rd on May 30th. There was about
only about 3 full trash bags and it took about an hour.
Thank you to Russ and
Diane Melanson, Andrea Rigel, Mike Winslow and Kristin, Forest and
Sherri Osborn.
Confluence Festival - June 14th
Due to El Nino The Confluence Festival has been moved to higher ground - the Dam Overlook behind
the Auburn Fair Grounds where parking will be easier than the usual shuttle buses. This a classic
event. See the press
release for details on the music, trail outings for mountain bikes, runners and hikers,
creative activities, great food and booths.
It's a semi-spiritual, semi-political
and very enjoyable way to embrace summer and reconnect with the river and others who value it.
The FTA will be there to show our photo album and talk to people about the trails
in our area. If you're interested in working at our booth, call Sherri Osborn
at 367-3928.
Volcano Canyon Youth Outing
We're starting our summer trail adventures on Thursday, June 18th with
an outing on the Western States Trail to Volcano Canyon. During the summer
some of the teachers and older kids from Forest Cottage Preschool join us
for the Youth Outings. This will an easy
walk, about 2 miles round-trip. Meet at the Preschool at
9 AM and we'll be carpooling up to the trail head at Bath Rd. Call Sherri at
367-3928 if you have questions.
Volunteers for Western States 100 Mile Run - June 27th
Right now we are still looking for a couple more volunteers to help with the
traffic control at Michigan Bluff for the run. So far, Andrea Rigel, Gary and Sue
Kirk, Peter and Joan Stafford and Sue Hodge have committed to helping. THANKS!
Due to the heavy snow in the high country the day will be longer than usual since
the cutoffs have been extended another two hours to 10 PM at Michigan Bluff.
Russ Melanson is organizing the volunteers into shifts. If you can volunteer,
please contact him at 367-4336.
Tevis Volunteers - August 8th
We have pretty good coverage for the Tevis Michigan Bluff traffic control. Andrea
Rigel, Larry and Carol Mobley, Keith and Stephanie (and a friend), Sue Hodge,
Russ and Diane Melanson, Mike Winslow and Sherri Osborn have signed up to help.
Larry Jordon will be doing the shuttling, as usual. If you'd like to join in,
please contact Russ Melanson at 367-4336.
