June's Meeting Agenda
July's Meeting
We will be meeting at the Transfer Station to further explore the site
of the proposed staging area. Please come with your ideas for what
you'd like to see at this site.
August's Meeting
Tahoe National Forest archeologist Nolan Smith of the Foresthill Ranger
District will be our guest speaker at our August 22nd meeting. Nolan
will tell us of his experiences through color slides exploring
Picayune Valley near the Granite Chief Wilderness on the Foresthill Divide.
Many of the slides show petroglyphs made by Native Americans who
inhabited the area as well as evidence of early settlers and sheep
herders in Picayune Valley. This will be a meeting you won't want to
miss, so mark your calendar.
We are planning a hike in this area for September.
Thank you Western States Run Volunteers!!!
Fifteen volunteers from the Foresthill Trails Alliance helped handle
traffic control for the Western States 100-mile Endurance Run on
Saturday, June 24th. Three FTA teams staffed three-hour shifts between
11:00 am and 8:00 pm at the Michigan Bluff Rd/Chickenhawk Rd junction
to direct traffic and parking for visitors and crew members who wanted
to watch the runners come through Michigan Bluff. A shuttle bus was
available to carry the visitors down into Michigan Bluff. Another team
of FTA volunteers handled the traffic control the the Foresthill Rd/
Deadwood Rd. junction to keep crew members from driving down Deadwood Rd
to Devil's Thumb which could have resulted in race officials disqualifying
their particular runner. Our thanks to Stephanie Williams,
Keith Collins, Joyce Williams, Bruce Littlefield,
Sue Crum, Lori Lunsford, Patty Tomashefsky, Diana Roussea, Jeanne
Hennessy, Sherri Osborn, Andrea Rigel, Carol Mobley, Larry Mobley,
Kathy Cunningham and Larry Clarke for their efforts in assisting with
the run this year.
Flowers out on the trail in June
| Look for Leopard Lillies (Lilium pardalinum) in slightly shady to sunny areas in wet meadows and along streams. Under favorable conditions it can reach a height of 10 ft. These spectacular orange flowers are wonderful jewels and can be planted in your own garden. Leopard Lillies and other native plants can be purchased at native plant sales that are held every spring and fall. These plant sales are great places to find native plants not easily found at our local garden centers. Sales are organized by local chapters of the California Native Plant Society and there is lots of information available on using native plants in your landscape. Look for sale announcements in Sacramento Bee's Life section and in the Auburn Journal usually in March and April and then again in October or November. |
Trails and Ponies on the 4th
The Foresthill Trails Alliance will participate in the big annual
Forth of July community celebration in Foresthill's Memorial
Park on Tuesday, July 4th, 10am - 4pm. We will be sponsoring pony
rides and have arranged for John and Marian Bost of Penn Valley to
bring their stable of thre P.O.A. (Pony of America) and three Shetland
ponies with a twenty-foot diameter riding ring as a children's riding
attraction. Our plan is that the pony rides will attract the children
who will bring their parents to our FTA booth so we can interest them
in joining our trail preservation, maintenance and acquisition efforts
on the Foresthill Divide. We will need volunteers to staff our booth
which will be set up next to the pony rides. If you can help, please
call Larry Mobley at 367-2325.
