FTA News April 2000 Next Meeting: Tuesday, April 25th, 6:30 PM, Foresthill Divide Middle School, Rm 15

Agenda

• Discuss the possibilities for a staging area at the transfer station. Placer County has acquired 34 acres and although some areas cannot be used due to restrictions over the landfill cap, there is plenty of room for a staging area and some trails. We received a map and a letter discribing the land and potential uses and restrictions from the County. Possible uses: Western States Trail access, Horse Arena, Nature Trail, BMX bicycle track. We will be meeting to walk the site on Wednesday, May 10th at 5:30 PM. If you are interested in any of these possible developments, please join us. We are going to need active members to take advantage of this land. Meadow Vista and Loomis are doing similar projects at old dump sites and can give us some tips on getting a project through environmental and other restrictions. The timing is good because the required environmental impact study can be done now as part of our Community Plan which already has the funding.
• Finalize plans for our Community Hike of the second section of the Foresthill Divide Loop trail (we are doing it in 3 parts) that will be held on Saturday, April 29th. Meed at the Upper Lake Clementine Parking lot at 10:00 AM. We will hike counter-clockwise ending at the gate opposite our starting point. Approximately 3 miles. Call Larry Mobley, 367-2325 to reserve a space as we can only have a group of 20. Our last hike was lots of fun. Children welcome.
• Fund Raising - it has really become a necessity. For the past few years the FTA has gotten by with membership dues and generous donations. To fulfill the goals of our organization we need to develop a fun and lucrative event to generate income. Any ideas? At this point our dues do not cover the cost of insurance ($1000/year) and the newsletter ($30/month). So.... if we, as a group, truly want to protect and expand the trail system on the Divide then we must increase our membership and raise funds so that we can acheive our goals. Please invite any friends that might be interested to join the FTA.
• We need a Work Party Coordinator. Can you plan a work party once or twice a month? Many of our members have mentioned on their renewal forms that they are available to help with trail clearing and maintenance. We just need someone to coordinate and lead our work parties.

• Redbud - Large shrub with tiny lavender flowers along the branches, usually found in sunny locations. Also a good drought-tolerant shrub for your garden!
• Bleeding Hearts - Small pink heart-shaped flowers with very lacy leaves, usually found in shady locations
• Dogwoods - Blooming now! Look for them along shady creeks and drainages.

  Saturday, June 3rd is National Trails Day. You can read about it at www.Americanhiking.org. The Western States Trust Fund (Led by Marty) is organizing a work party that day which will help us get recognized by the American Trails Association and get the Western States Trail listed on their web site as a 'Millennium Trail'.
