Old Duncan Peak
Lookout
Old Duncan Peak Lookout was at one time the fire
observation location for miles of the Western Sierras. Now, only the old platform remains, however,
the vista is an incredible sight! To the
east are the high crests of the Sierras, to the west the costal range, to the
north and south the Sacramento Valley and San Joaquin Valley.
Approximately 28 miles from Foresthill is Robinson Flat. From there you turn right on to a dirt road
and you have a choice to park at the Robinson camp ground and walk the ¾ miles
to the platform or drive .2 miles and take a right turn on a dirt road (for
high clearance vehicles only). From
there, go .2 miles to a split in the road and take a right. After another .2 miles there will be a split
in the road. Going left will end at the
trailhead, going right will also end near the trail head. The trail is not marked but leads up to the platform
and is about 200 yards long.
The trail is
short but steep and narrow in spots. Due
to the elevation at around 7,000 feet, breathing can be a little more
difficult. Therefore, this trail is of
moderate difficulty for the average low elevation hiker. Things to see and do –
spectacular views, great place for lunch, view the new Duncan Peak Lookout on
Little Bald Mountain (staffed in the summer) and relaxing. Things to watch out for – elevation effects,
long falls are possible (children), food left in cars could be a bear issue,
fast moving weather.
