Mumford Bar Trail

Mumford Bar trail is a beautiful shady trail that stretches from Foresthill Road to the North Fork of the American River.  Starting at the Mumford Bar campground, approximately 2.7 miles east of the China Wall OHV staging area (about 13 miles past Foresthill) this trail drops from 5,300 feet of elevation to the river at about 2600 feet in 3.5 miles.  A reasonably paced walk takes 1 ½ hours to reach the river, and takes nearly twice that time to come back to the trailhead.

The trail is open to hikers, equestrians and mountain bikes and is considered to be a moderately difficult to difficult trail.  Parking is available at the campground and also at the trailhead (about ½ miles down the road from the campground) for high clearance 4X4’s (see pictures of the road below).  Things to see and do – views of the Royal Gorge, wildlife, Mumford cabin, swimming, fishing and relaxing.  Things to watch out for – poison oak, river currents and the last part of the trail to access the river is pretty steep.

This trail is lightly used and connects with the American River Trail which continues upstream to the Beacroft and Sailor Flat trails.  Make sure to take plenty of water and essentials with you, water shoes are nice once you arrive at the river.
