PROXY Server Testers WANTED.......PROXY Server Testers WANTED.......
Foothill.net World Wide Web Proxy Service. Foothill.net has recently set up and is testing a proxy server for our
customers to use.
Q. What is a proxy server?
A. A proxy server basically allows 'objects' retrieved from the world wide web to be stored on a disk cache. And later
providing the cached 'object' is not different from the one currently available from the world wide web will provide
the end-user with the cached copy. The 'objects' referred to here can be HTML (web) pages, images, embedded files
and ftp'able programs.
Q. How will it benefit me?
A. The benefits derived from using a proxy server are faster access times when accessing popular web pages. This is
achieved because the local proxy server is giving you the web page and images etc. and not the actual location. The
proxy server builds up a list of commonly accessed objects through everyday usage. When using the proxy server you
will notice (if you are using Netscape) that the browser will alternate between the URL(web site) you have requested
and the proxy server. A noticeable increase in accessing the page should become apparent. The proxy server working
in conjunction with your own Browsers disk cache should result in faster access times.
Q. How do I configure my browser to utilize the proxy?
A. If you are using Netscape 3.0 (or earlier).
Select the menu item Options, and select Network Preferences
Click on the tab Proxies
Click Manual Proxy Configuration and then click on the 'View' button.
Against HTTP proxy enter the following domain name proxy.foothill.net
against the corresponding port number enter 8080
Then click on OK, this will return you to the network preferences screen, click on OK once more. Your proxy is now
configured.
If at any time you wish to disable the proxy, because proxy.foothill.net cannot be contacted or you dont want to go
through the proxy server, just follow the above steps and select No proxies and click on OK. Your browser will then
communicate directly to the web sites you are accessing.
If you are using Netscape Communicator
Select the menu item Edit, and select Preferences.
In the 'Category' box to the left of the preferences screen, click on the Advanced '+' symbol and expand the
preferences tree structure so that 'Proxies' is visible. Select 'proxies', Click Manual Proxy Configuration and then
click on the 'View' button.
If you are using MicroSoft Internet Explorer,
Select the menu item View, and select options.
Click on the 'Connection' tab
Click on the 'Settings' button
Against HTTP proxy enter the following domain name proxy.foothill.net
against the corresponding port number enter 8080
Click on the 'OK' button, this will return you to the connection preferences screen.
Click on 'Apply', then click on 'OK' . Your proxy is now configured.
If at any time you wish to disable the proxy, because proxy.foothill.net cannot be contacted or you dont want to go
through the proxy server, just follow the above steps and un-select the 'connect though a proxy' option. Click on
'OK' . Your browser will then communicate directly to the web sites you are accessing.
Please contact support@foothill.net if you require help in configuring your browser.
Please send us note if you decide to use the Proxy server so that we are aware of who is using it.Posted: Monday, June 22, 1998 at 17:21:19

Just an update about the NET...Tuesday February 3 12:38 PM EST Key Internet connector breaks down during upgrade By Michael Stutz SAN FRANCISCO (Wired) - A malfunction during a planned upgrade at MAE-West, one of the nation's key switching facilities for Internet connectivity, led to a serious interruption of service Sunday and Monday,
The outage, which began Sunday morning, caused slowdowns or outages for Internet users, until early Monday afternoon, when engineers finally were able to harness the situation.
The official explanation was that an unexpected problem with a needed upgrade to the facility caused the temporary outage.
"The ISP (Internet service provider) customers need more bandwidth, and the gigabit switches were at their maximum limit as far as bandwidth," said Linda Laughlin, spokeswoman for WorldCom, the telecommunications giant who owns the San Jose facility. "With the upgrade over the weekend, there were a couple unexpected delays for customers."
MAE-West is one of two major network traffic exchange points in the United States. The other, MAE-East, is in Vienna, Virginia.
WorldCom owns and operates both these and several smaller-scale Metropolitan Area Ethernet, or MAE, facilities throughout the country; Internet services connect to these MAEs to exchange data at very high speeds with other networks.

Voice Recordings Calling 887, and 652 NumbersCustomers are getting Voice Recordings when dialing the 887 and 652 numbers. Voice Recordings indicate a problem at Pac Bell's switching facility between the customer and Foothill.net. Another similar note: Busies signals. A slow Busy signal would indicate at that moment, all modems are in use, and for the customer to try dialing in again. A Fast Busy signal indicates a problem at Pac Bell's switching facility. And again, the customer should try dialing again.
