Revised: February 28, 2000
WHY IT'S IMPORTANT TO PROMPTLY REGISTER WITH THE BSA.
What does the $8.00 National fee pay for?
* Liability insurance
* Computer service ~ each paid member is entered on the National system, which enables us
to do mailers, keep advancement records, re-registration, transfers, reports and other
administrative tasks.
* Defers cost of uniforms and literature.
* Defers cost of developing our programs, updating material and research and development
at the National level.
* Defers cost of training development and presentation to volunteers and paid staff of
local councils.
B>Where does it go?
*The $8.00 goes to the National BSA office in Texas.
*Note: The $8.00 fee does not fund the entire National BSA budget. The BSA Supply
Divisio (Scout Shops), Council charter fees, unit charter fees and their own fund-raising
efforts significantly add to this amount.
* None of the 8.00 fee directly supports the Golden Empire Council. Each Council chartered
to BSA must pay a national fee too (just like each unit), and raise their own funds to
provide local service. (This is one reason we must conduct the SME/FOS campaign in January
and February.)
Why does this matter to you?
* Remember, you are not a member of Boy Scouts of America until that fee and signed
application is turned in to the Council registrar.
* All of the above should be important to you. However, on a realistic side, a main point
of concern for leaders and boys is:
* Liability Insurance *
BSA will support any registered leader, charter partner or member in any liability issue
as long as they are following BSA policy (like 2 deep leadership and proper filing of tour
permits).
* Face it, we do a lot of stuff ~ camping, boating, driving other peoples kids
around and letting other peoples kids on our property etc. Be smart and safe. Make
sure everyone is registered, review your Guide to Safe Scouting and get trained!!
*Note:If you are a leader/member in two different units, you only pay one fee. If
you move from one unit to another, you pay the $1 transfer fee, whether it is in or out of
Council. You may only be registered in one position in any unit.
